Wild stories. Snackable science. Classic TV.

The critters are back on another bold mission to survive in the boreal forest – a little known place that’s the world’s largest ecosystem and a super-influencer for the health of the planet.

New episodes March 20 / 2026

After its wildly successful “mockmentary” pilot season, the curious (and slightly chaotic) crew of ground squirrels are now in charge of the forest’s favourite television station. Comedy, science and retro vibes are still at the heart of the show, but the species and environment are adapting to new climate realities.

A snackable mash-up of “The Muppets”, “SCTV” and “Hinterland Who’s Who”, each 15-minute episode features a sketch comedy segment, a science explainer, a climate report and conversations with experts and everyday folks to learn how animals, ecosystems and people can all be better neighbours.

Equal parts silly and sincere, Northern Tails is original edutainment created in the Yukon, Canada – to be shared around the world.

CHARACTERS | Meet the Neighbours

Everyone plays important roles in the Boreal Forest. Each character is developed using key biological and behavioural characteristics of the species – with a zap of pop culture to make them relatable and fun. Our Yukon team worked with Calgary-based Puppet Stuff to design and build the starring cast and select supporting characters.

We are puppets with a purpose! Our superpower is engaging audiences with smart, fun and relatable “edutainment” to learn about the species and ecosystems in the boreal. We’re stewards for climate awareness, sustainable conservation and biodiversity. And we’re passionate about connecting communities to work together to make a positive difference.

Our HomE | The Boreal Forest

With a billion acres across Northern Canada, crawling with thousands of creatures (and very few people) and streaming with the most surface freshwater in the world, the Boreal ecosystem is a super-influencer for the health of the entire planet.

WE ARE THE WOODS | Music Video Special

This is our love letter to the boreal forest – and a call to action. It’s a tribute to the classic, global chart-topper “We Are the World”. #BorealBoosters

On stage in Whitehorse #Yukonsgottalent

To bring the Boreal ecosystems alive for production, Shot in The Dark’s Art Department built a sound stage in Whitehorse, with a throwback, theatrical production style. The constructed studio sets combine hand-painted background and natural, felted props to create a whimsical environment and several satellite “locations” to visit the characters in their habitats (a bog, beaver lodge, squirrel burrow and wolverine dens).

Learning ThemeS

Learning is fun, knowledge is power! These educational shorts show how northern animals interact with each other, their environment, people and the wider world, without being too serious.

Who lives in the Boreal Forest? We’ll meet the “famous” species in the Boreal Forest, learn about their biology, habitats and the role they play in the ecosystem.

Why is it important? The Boreal’s swampy muskeg and thick forests aren’t as photogenic as the Amazon or Arctic, but they are true superstars of the planet's health.

How is the Boreal Forest changing? Shifts in climate and increased human activity are impacting the animals and plants of the Boreal. How (and if) they adapt is important to all of us.

Audiences: Curious, Creative, Caring

Puppets have a special talent to entertain and educate. Undeniably, they cast a magical spell on kids who fall in love and watch on repeat. But Northern Tails is not your typical “kids” program. Our science content, sketch comedy bits and retro production aesthetic appeal to diverse audiences who align with the spirit and virtues of the show including: nature nuts, environmental champions, creatives and puppet geeks – nostalgic and new.
